OVERSEAS COUNTRIES VIA LE HAVRE - Lot 330
OVERSEAS COUNTRIES VIA LE HAVRE Commercial L.A.S. signed Rivembault, addressed to a Bordeaux merchant, Port-au-Prince, November 2, 1829. 4 pages in-4, with address on verso bearing the framed postal mark "PAYS D'OUTREMER / PAR LE HAVRE", transit stamps and handwritten mention of taxation. Small marginal loss with minor damage, usual creases and slight traces of use. A long and remarkable commercial letter from Port-au-Prince to a company in Bordeaux, concerning colonial trade and shipping operations between Saint-Domingue and France. The correspondent gives precise details of shipping conditions, payment terms, capital advances, coffee cargoes and various colonial products and commodities shipped to Bordeaux. The letter contains numerous details on market prices, commissions, marine insurance and payment deadlines. The writer stresses the difficulties of supply, the risks associated with crossings, and the need for sufficient liquidity to support commercial operations. The last page contains a large number of figures detailing various goods, quantities and financial valuations. Very interesting testimony to French merchant networks in the West Indies in the early 19th century, illustrating the ongoing economic links between Port-au-Prince, Le Havre and Bordeaux a few decades after Haitian independence. Beautiful piece of colonial postal history with "Pays d'Outremer par Le Havre" mark.
