OVERSEAS COUNTRIES BY LE HAVRE - Lot 329
OVERSEAS COUNTRIES BY LE HAVRE L.A.S. in English signed A. Penduit, addressed to MM. Clostman & Cie in Bordeaux, Port-au-Prince, January 24, 1830. 1 page in-4 with address on verso bearing framed postmark "PAYS D'OUTREMER / PAR LE HAVRE", transit stamps and trace of red wax on fold. Small marginal tears and tears with slight damage to text, creases and traces of use. Interesting commercial letter written in English from Port-au-Prince to a Bordeaux trading house. The correspondent transmits a letter intended for "Mrs. Benduit", to be forwarded to Paris upon arrival, and then discusses the turbulent political and military situation in Saint-Domingue. The letter mentions the tensions surrounding the Spanish general "Caselda", who landed in the Môle-Saint-Nicolas area with armed men to demand the return of the Spanish part of the island, a claim rejected by the Haitian authorities. The writer underlines the political and commercial uncertainty prevailing in the colony at the time, and indicates that a ship is ready to leave the port. A rare account of Anglo-French commercial relations with Haiti in the aftermath of independence, combining private correspondence, maritime concerns and the geopolitical context of the Caribbean. A fine piece of colonial postal history with "Pays d'Outremer par Le Havre" mark.
