DE ROZIÈRES (Jean-Baptiste de Rozières) - Lot 323
DE ROZIÈRES (Jean-Baptiste de Rozières) L.A.S., Rouen, May 18, 1825, addressed to "Monsieur Cordier", 4 pages in-4 on a double leaf, autograph address on verso with postmark. Interesting letter from a correspondent identified in an early note attached as possibly Captain De Rozières, a corresponding member of Antoine-François de Fourcroy. The note specifies that the author is poorly documented and that the Académie des Sciences has only one autograph of his. Written from Rouen on May 18, 1825, this long letter deals mainly with administrative and technical matters. De Rozières mentions a "sample account", printing and correction issues, as well as various steps requiring order and method. He complains about the difficulty of his work, the slowness he encounters, and the numerous checks he has to carry out before finalizing the project for which he is responsible. The correspondent is kept informed of the progress of operations; the author details the obstacles encountered, the people involved and the solutions envisaged. Many passages testify to a methodical spirit and a constant concern for the accuracy of the work undertaken. The letter thus offers a vivid insight into the workings of the scholarly and administrative networks of the first half of the 19th century. The legible signature appears at the end of the letter. The autograph address on the reverse is to "Monsieur Cordier", with a particularly well-developed formula of respect. An unusual piece, accompanied by an early scholarly note concerning the identification of the author. Condition: folds from use, small marginal tear with no damage to text, postmark retained.
