ERLANGER (Camille) (1863-1919) - Lot 320
ERLANGER (Camille) (1863-1919)
French composer, notably of the opera Aphrodite, based on the novel by Pierre Louÿs.
L.A.S. "Camille Erlanger", Paris, April 16, 1906, 1 page in-8.
Charming letter of thanks to an unnamed correspondent, written shortly after the Paris premiere of Aphrodite, one of the composer's greatest successes.
Erlanger writes:
"I wish to send you, without delay, my sincere congratulations on your very fine article on Aphrodite, and to express to you, with my gratitude, my multiple and cordial thanks."
This letter testifies to the critical reception given to Aphrodite, an opera premiered at the Opéra-Comique on March 23, 1906, with a libretto based on the famous novel by Pierre Louÿs. The work enjoyed considerable success, and made a lasting contribution to its author's reputation.
Particularly warm in tone, this missive reveals Erlanger's relations with the journalistic and literary circles that accompanied the launch of his work. The explicit mention of Aphrodite places the letter in the immediate context of this success.
Fine autograph signature "Camille Erlanger" at the bottom of the page.
Interesting piece for the history of the Opéra-Comique and the critical reception of Camille Erlanger's work in the early 20th century.
Condition: very good; original centerfold; slight transparency of text on verso, unaffected.
