DIÉTERLE (Jules) (1811-1889) - Lot 318
DIÉTERLE (Jules) (1811-1889)
Decorative painter, architect, designer and administrator of the Manufacture de Beauvais, one of the leading exponents of French decorative art during the Second Empire.
L.A.S. "J. Diéterle", April 19, 1874, 1 page in-8.
Pleasant autograph letter addressed to a newspaper or art magazine editor, in which Jules Diéterle requests publication of a notice concerning a theatrical performance.
The artist writes:
"Dear Director,
could you please gratify your servant with a kindly advertisement for tonight's performance (...)".
before concluding with a particularly courteous formula:
"Please accept the highest consideration of your devoted servant".
This letter is directly linked to the theatrical and artistic activities of Jules Diéterle, then one of the most prominent figures in the world of stage decor. A collaborator of Charles Séchan, decorator of the Opéra and numerous Parisian theaters, Diéterle maintained close relations with the artistic press and newspaper editors responsible for announcing shows, performances and cultural events.
The document thus bears witness to the customs of the Parisian theatrical milieu in the 19th century, where artists frequently sought the support of the press to publicize their creations and performances.
Fine autograph signature "J. Diéterle" at the bottom of the letter.
Interesting testimony to the relationship between the entertainment world and the press in the early years of the Third Republic.
Condition: good; original postal folds; slight marginal wear without affecting the text.
