CHAMPEIN (Stanislas) (1753-1830) - Lot 316
CHAMPEIN (Stanislas) (1753-1830) French composer, conductor and music journalist. Founder and director of La Mélomanie, a periodical devoted to music, literature and theater. L.A.S. "Champein", Paris, June 24, on letterhead of La Mélomanie (23, rue Lepelletier), 1 page in-8 oblong, with autograph address on verso to Léon Pillet. Short, charming autograph letter to Léon Pillet, a leading figure in the Paris theater world, in which Champein requests a few tickets for a performance: "Monsieur et Ami, Can you give me a stall and two flowerbeds for tonight? It would give me great pleasure. He concludes with a friendly formula: "All yours, Champein." This brief missive is a perfect illustration of the sociable relations that united journalists, critics, directors and theater men in early 19th-century Paris. The letterhead of La Mélomanie, a specialized magazine devoted to music and entertainment, further enhances the document's interest by placing it in the context of Parisian artistic life. The addressee, Léon Pillet, also belongs to the world of show business and theater administration, which gives this request for tickets a character that is typical of exchanges between players in the cultural life of the period. A lovely piece of Parisian theatrical sociability, preserved with its autograph address. Condition: some scattered foxing; original folds; good overall condition.
