CHAMPEIN (Stanislas) (1753-1830) - Lot 313
CHAMPEIN (Stanislas) (1753-1830)
Composer, conductor, music journalist and director of La Mélomanie, a magazine devoted to music, literature and entertainment.
L.A.S. "Champein", July 5, 1826, 2 pages in-4, autograph address on verso to Monsieur de Pixérécourt, homme de lettres, rue de Sentiers, Paris.
Very interesting autograph letter to René-Charles Guilbert de Pixérécourt (1773-1844), the famous playwright nicknamed the "Corneille des Boulevards" and a major figure in French melodrama.
Champein announces the dispatch of an autograph document he considers particularly remarkable:
"I offer you a posthumous and unpublished autograph monument. It's an entire poem by Caillou...".
He points out that this author, like Michelangelo, combined the talents of painter and poet:
"Caillou was, like Michelangelo, a painter and a poet.
The letter therefore probably accompanies an unpublished literary manuscript, which Champein wishes to share with Pixérécourt, to whom he acknowledges the necessary competence to appreciate its value.
After this scholarly communication, the letter takes a more personal turn. Champein asks for several tickets to a show to entertain relatives:
"Is it possible to obtain for next Friday (...) the modest sum of five seats only at the premieres for the Lenoir family who are dining at my house that day?"
The author concludes with a warm, grateful tone, blending literary considerations, worldly sociability and theatrical preoccupations, a characteristic reflection of Parisian cultural life under the Restoration.
The autograph address on the reverse is particularly interesting, as it is addressed to :
"Monsieur de Pixérécourt, homme de lettres".
Fine Champein autograph signature.
A choice piece associating two important figures of Parisian theatrical and literary life in the early 19th century.
Condition: some freckling and handling marks; mailing folds; small old marginal lack without affecting text; good overall condition.
