BELLART (Nicolas-François) (1761-1826) - Lot 311
BELLART (Nicolas-François) (1761-1826) French magistrate, lawyer and politician. Public prosecutor at the Royal Court of Paris during the Restoration, famous for his role in several major political trials of the early 19th century. Official document signed "Bellart", Paris, August 29, 1818, 1 page in-folio on paper printed by the Royal Court of Paris - Parquet - Ordre du Procureur général. Interesting judicial document emanating directly from the Parquet de la Cour royale de Paris and signed by one of the most important magistrates of the Restoration. The document orders the concierge of the house of detention to receive and keep several convicts whose sentences have just been modified by royal pardon. Among those mentioned are * Pierre-Louis Leroy, sentenced for grievous bodily harm to five years' imprisonment, reduced to two years by royal pardon of August 28, 1818; * Jean-Baptiste Lognos (reading to be confirmed), sentenced to 22 years' imprisonment, reduced to 10 years by royal decision of the same day. The text bears witness to the practical operation of the right of pardon under the Second Restoration, and to the relationship between criminal justice and royal power. It illustrates the administrative procedure immediately following the sovereign's decision, with the Attorney General transmitting the necessary orders for the execution of the measure. The piece bears the handsome autograph signature of Nicolas-François Bellart, then Attorney General of the Royal Court of Paris, a leading figure in the French judiciary and an influential player in judicial life under Louis XVIII. A typical document of the judicial administration of the Restoration, signed by one of the most famous magistrates of his time. Condition: some marginal soiling and traces of folding; minor corner defects; good overall condition; signature perfectly preserved.
