BELLART (Nicolas-François) (1761-1826) - Lot 309
BELLART (Nicolas-François) (1761-1826) French lawyer, magistrate and politician. Public prosecutor at the Royal Court of Paris during the Restoration, famous for his role in the major political trials of the reigns of Louis XVIII and Charles X. Official document signed "Bellart", Paris, May 17, 1821, in-folio printed by the Cour royale de Paris - Parquet - Ordre du Procureur général, with wet seal of the public prosecutor's office. Judicial document ordering the immediate release of a prisoner from the Bicêtre prison after serving his full sentence. The order is addressed to the establishment's janitor: "The concierge of the Maison de Bicêtre will immediately set him free, if he is not detained for any other reason...". The beneficiary is a certain Jean Lin (reading to be confirmed), convicted of : "theft from a furnished house". to five years' imprisonment by decision of the Paris Assize Court on May 14, 1816, executed on the following May 18. The document notes that the sentence has expired, and consequently orders his release. This document, bearing the official seal of the public prosecutor's office and Bellart's autograph, illustrates the day-to-day workings of the prison administration under the Second Restoration. It provides concrete evidence of prisoner management at Bicêtre, one of the main detention centers in the Paris region. The sober administrative style contrasts with the historical importance of the signatory, whose career was marked by the major trials of the period and his influence within the royal judiciary. A typical example of the execution of criminal sentences under the Restoration. Condition: very good; original administrative folds; dampstamp well preserved; minor marginal soiling.
