COLLIGNON (Armand) (1840-1930)
French historian, archaeologist and administrator. Mayor of Giverny for many years, close to Claude Monet's artistic community.
L.A.S. "A. Collignon", on Giverny Town Hall letterhead, Paris, April 29, 1907, 1 page in-8, addressed to Claude Monet.
Interesting autograph letter addressed to the master of Impressionism, then living in Giverny, concerning a subscription or a local charity.
Collignon writes:
"En joignant mes remerciements à ceux du Conseil pour votre contribution généreuse, je vous prie de m'inscrire pour 100 francs."
Then he concludes:
"Please accept, dear sir, the assurance of my most sympathetic and devoted sentiments."
This letter bears witness to Claude Monet's relationship with the municipal authorities in Giverny. It reveals the painter's involvement in local life and the works of solidarity supported by the commune. The explicit mention of a financial contribution underlines Monet's role in the civic life of the village, which at the turn of the century had become one of Europe's most famous artistic centers.
The document's interest is enhanced by :
* the direct address to Claude Monet;
* the official letterhead of the Giverny Town Hall;
* the local context of the Giverny art colony;
* the signature of Mayor Armand Collignon.
A lovely piece of Claude Monet's daily life in Giverny, illustrating his links with the municipal authorities.
Condition: very good; mailing folds; paper well preserved; neat signature.
