CHAMPFLEURY (Jules Husson, dit) (1821-1889) - Lot 300
CHAMPFLEURY (Jules Husson, dit) (1821-1889)
Novelist, art critic, historian of caricature and major figure of French realism.
L.A.S. "Champfleury", April 18, 1869, 1 p. in-12 with envelope addressed to M. Gail, member of the Institut and professor at the Collège de France.
Charming autograph letter to his "dear master", written shortly before a trip abroad. In it, Champfleury announces his imminent departure and sets out the precise details of a meeting:
"I am leaving next Tuesday starting at noon... I will be able to be at 11 a.m. at M. Chénier's..."
The writer regrets not being able to extend his Parisian visits any further before his trip, and takes care to warn his correspondent personally. Despite its brevity, this letter bears witness to the close relations he maintained with Parisian scholarly and academic circles.
The presence of the preserved envelope, bearing his imperial stamp and addressed to Joseph Gail, member of the Institut, adds historical and documentary interest to the whole.
Fine autograph signature by Champfleury.
Commentary
Champfleury's appointment bills and occasional letters are sought-after when they identify his network of contacts. Here, the addressee, Joseph Gail (1795-1881), scholar, Hellenist and member of the Institut, belongs to the first circle of scholars of his time. The document illustrates Champfleury's links with academic circles, even though he remained one of the leading exponents of the realist movement.
