PÉAN (Jules Émile). - Lot 293
PÉAN (Jules Émile). Born in Marboué. 1830-1898. French surgeon. Commander of the Legion of Honor. B.A.S. "Péan", addressed to "Mon cher confrère & ami". S.l., January 7, 1895. 1 page 1/3 in-12 oblong. Charming autograph bill concerning the operation of the International Hospital founded by Jules Péan two years earlier. The famous surgeon asks his correspondent to advertise in a medical journal the recruitment competition for interns in his department: "Would you please announce in your newspaper that the competition for the appointment of Interns in my department at the International Hospital will take place on Tuesday January 22 at 11 a.m.?" He then refers to an earlier court case: "Did you bring the trial you told me about to a successful conclusion? Your solicitor hasn't sent me anything." The letter ends with friendly wishes for the New Year. Jules Péan, a major figure in 19th-century French surgery, was one of the great pioneers of modern abdominal surgery, and the first to successfully remove the spleen. In 1893, at his own expense, he founded the Hôpital International, an innovative establishment designed to accommodate all patients, including the most destitute. An engaging little document, testifying to the hospital and scientific activities of the great surgeon at the end of his career.
