HOUSSAYE, Henry (1848-1911). - Lot 282
HOUSSAYE, Henry (1848-1911). Autograph letter signed about an artistic trip and a program of performances in Reims. Beautiful autograph letter signed "Jenny House" [probably Jenny Houzet / Houssey, identification to be specified], written in Paris on "December 1st", on two in-8 pages. Addressed to a male correspondent, the letter concerns the organization of a trip to the provinces and a program of theatrical and musical performances. The author states that he is "in complete agreement with you as to the conditions", before going on to detail the planned program: "Marguerite au Rouet de Spinka Le Grand Air du Prophète, Weber Les Violets, Massenet". The correspondent then explains her travel itinerary: "I'll be leaving on Friday December 9 by the 8.50 a.m. train, which arrives in Reims at noon. I think this is the best train I can take to be able to rehearse in the afternoon." The letter closes with a polite expression of eagerness, followed by an elegant autograph signature. Interesting account of musical life and artistic touring in the provinces in the XIXᵉ century, evoking both the lyrical repertoire then in vogue - Meyerbeer, Massenet - and the practical constraints of rail travel associated with performances and rehearsals. Charming autograph piece with particularly careful and decorative handwriting.
