GASTELLIER (René-Georges) - Lot 279
GASTELLIER (René-Georges) GASTELLIER, René-Georges (1741-1821). L.A.S. "Gastellier", Montargis, November 25, 1807; 1 page in-4. Beautiful autograph letter to a correspondent of the Société d'Agriculture, written shortly after his reinstatement as a correspondent of this learned institution. A renowned physician, former consultant to the Duc d'Orléans, deputy of the Loiret to the Legislative Assembly and then a moderate politician under the Revolution, Gastellier writes movingly of his rehabilitation after the revolutionary troubles: "...reinstatement in my former position as correspondent..." He instructs his addressee to be his "interpreter to all the members in general and to each of them in particular", in order to convey "the tributes of my respectful gratitude and of my fullest devotion". The letter bears witness to the climate of institutional reconciliation at the start of the Empire, and sheds light on the provincial scholarly networks around the Société d'Agriculture. The style remains strongly marked by the formulas of civility inherited from the 18th century. A well-preserved, highly legible document, with a large signature in brown ink.
