ROZE (Amable) - Lot 274
ROZE (Amable)
ROZE, Amable.
Advisor and physician to Louis XIII. P.S. "Roze", September 18, 1617; vellum, oblong in-folio, with analysis and old numeral on spine.
Important document signed by Amable Roze, advisor and ordinary physician to Louis XIII, concerning payment of his wages in the King's household.
The document constitutes a receipt for the considerable sum of "six cens livres" received for a quarter of his office, a sum ordered by Antoine de Loménie, Secretary and Superintendent of Finances of the King's Household. The particularly high amount of the payment underlines the importance of Roze's position with the King.
This document bears witness to the administrative and financial organization of the royal household under the young Louis XIII, a few years after the assassination of Henri IV, at a time when physicians attached to the court enjoyed privileged rank and treatment. Documents of this type, autographed by royal physicians and preserved on vellum, remain rare.
Fine early 17th-century cursive handwriting with "Roze" autograph signature. Old analysis and annotations on verso. Scattered traces of moisture and soiling, small marginal hole without affecting the text; well preserved and very legible.
