RAYNARD (Jehan) - Lot 272
RAYNARD (Jehan)
RAYNARD, Jehan.
Advisor and physician to King Henry III. P.S. "Raynard". S.l., June 25, 1585; oblong vellum.
Important receipt signed by Jehan Raynard, ordinary physician to King Henri III, relating to a considerable sum of "mille escuz sol" received from Pierre Mollan, treasurer of the Savings Bank, "assignée par mandement dudict Mollan adressant à Michel Sablé, trésorier des parties casuelles".
The document sheds light on the financial mechanisms of the King's household during the reign of Henri III, and testifies to Raynard's high rank within the royal medical corps. The mention of "parties casuelles", the administration in charge of the Crown's extraordinary revenues, makes this document of particular interest for the administrative and financial history of the French monarchy at the end of the 16th century.
Beautiful cursive chancery script on vellum, adorned with a large calligraphic initial and a well-marked autograph signature "Raynard". On verso, handwritten mention of payment.
A beautifully presented document, well preserved despite some of the diffuse soiling and wear inherent to this type of Renaissance administrative document.
