MARESCOT (Michel) - Lot 271
MARESCOT (Michel)
MARESCOT, Michel.
Born in Vimoutiers (Normandy), 1539-1606. French physician, first physician to King Henri IV from 1595. B.A.S. "M. Marescot". S.l.n.d. [Paris], October 12, 1595; vellum in-8 oblong.
Interesting document signed by Michel Marescot, recently elevated to the prestigious position of Henri IV's first physician at the time this document was written. A renowned physician of the late 16th century, Marescot was one of the leading figures in royal medicine under the first Bourbons.
This autograph receipt concerns the payment of "two escuz and five solz" corresponding to a quarter annuity "à cause de huict escuz vingt solz de rente à moy constituée par les prévost des marchands et eschevins de la ville de Paris". This document illustrates the mechanisms by which the City of Paris established annuities for the benefit of the King's officers and servants.
Beautiful cursive handwriting on vellum, with well-marked autograph signature "M. Marescot". An administrative document of real historical interest, linking the famous physician directly to the financial administration of Paris under Henry IV, in the aftermath of the Wars of Religion.
Some old soiling and traces of use; satisfactory preservation for this type of document on late 16th-century vellum.
