DESROUSSEAULX (Jehan des Rousseaulx or). - Lot 264
DESROUSSEAULX (Jehan des Rousseaulx or).
Physician to Kings François II and Charles IX; physician to their sister Madame Marguerite de Valois, future Queen Margot.
P.S. "Desrousseaulx". S.l., July 15, 1568. Oblong vellum in-folio. Wetness and large old stain on fold; handwritten note on verso.
Rare autograph receipt signed by Jehan des Rousseaulx, physician attached to Marguerite de Valois, sister of kings François II and Charles IX and future wife of Henri de Navarre, the future Henri IV.
The document acknowledges receipt :
"...the sum of one hundred livres tournois for my fees because of my position as physician to Madame [...] from the quarter of April, May and July...".
This document bears witness to the financial organization of the House of Marguerite de Valois in the years preceding her marriage to Henri de Navarre. Documents relating to the personal physicians of the future Queen Margot remain particularly uncommon, especially for this troubled period of the Wars of Religion.
The receipt features a handsome autograph signature "Desrousseaulx", accompanied by a highly developed initials. The reverse side bears a classification summary.
Soft vellum with significant traces of old wetness, browning and soiling, but no major damage to the legibility of the text. Historically interesting for the history of court medicine and the immediate Valois entourage.
