MOREAU (Jean-Baptiste). - Lot 260
MOREAU (Jean-Baptiste).
Adviser and ordinary physician to the King, doctor regent of the Faculty of Medicine in Paris, lecturer and professor of surgery.
P.S. "Moreau". Paris, April 12, 1704. Vellum in-4 oblong with vignette and cachet of the rentes de l'Hôtel de Ville de Paris.
Important autograph receipt signed by Jean-Baptiste Moreau, relating to an annuity constituted on the aids and gabelles of the City of Paris:
"...The sum of one hundred and five livres for the last six months of the present year... because of one hundred and ten livres of annuity constituted on the aids and gabelles..."
The document bears the large printed annuity stamp of the Hôtel de Ville de Paris and several autograph signatures, including that of Moreau, testifying to the administrative and financial procedures surrounding public annuities in the early 18th century.
A physician to the King and professor of surgery, Moreau belonged to the circle of the most highly regarded Parisian practitioners of his time, at a time when the Paris Faculty of Medicine still exerted a decisive influence on French medical education.
Beautifully written on vellum, in elegant, clearly legible handwriting, despite a few ink discharges and old stains. Traces of folding and marginal restorations.
