HAMELIN (Jacques Félix Emmanuel, baron). - Lot 239
HAMELIN (Jacques Félix Emmanuel, baron). Born in Honfleur in 1768 - died in Paris in 1839. French admiral. Baron d'Empire. Director of the Navy's map and plan repository. B.A.S. "Bon Hamelin" to M. Jamelle. Paris, November 12, 1833. 1 p. in-8. Interesting autograph letter signed by Admiral Hamelin concerning maritime signals and navigation regulations of the French Navy under the July Monarchy. Director of the Navy's depot of maps and plans since 1832, Hamelin sends his correspondent a "copy of the Nouveau Cahier des signaux" intended for Commander Bellanger, and asks for critical feedback on this new edition: "...I beg M. to send me any observations he may have on this new edition, as well as on the method used...". This short bill testifies to the attention given to standardizing naval communications and improving the signal systems used by the French Royal Navy in the early 1830s. A fine piece of work from a great naval officer of the First Empire and Restoration, famous in particular for his campaigns in the Indian Ocean and his battles against the British Navy. Interesting technical and historical content on French maritime administration.
