BAUDIN (Charles) - Lot 229
BAUDIN (Charles)
Paris, 1784 - 1854. French naval officer, admiral and politician.
L.A.S. "Ch. B." addressed to Henry Villeneuve.
S.l.n.d. [April 25]. 1 page in-8 with handwritten address and postmarks on verso.
Short but interesting autograph letter concerning the sailing of the frigate La Thétis and the return to France of an officer.
Responding to two questions from his correspondent, Baudin writes:
"1° Your brother is free to return to any port in France he wishes.
He then adds maritime information about La Thétis's South American campaign:
"2° La Thétis touched down at Montevideo, on her way from Rio to Valparaiso."
The letter is signed with a characteristic broad initials. The reverse bears the autograph address: "Monsieur Henry Villeneuve, Rue de la Victoire, 9, à Paris", accompanied by several postmarks.
Interesting piece for the history of the French navy and naval communications with South America in the first half of the 19th century.
Charles Baudin took part in several major naval campaigns before becoming one of the leading general officers of the French navy under the July Monarchy and the Second Republic.
