BAUDIN (Charles) - Lot 225
BAUDIN (Charles) Paris, 1784 - 1854. French naval officer. Admiral. L.A.S. "Charles Baudin" to an Admiral. Le Havre, June 3, 1828. 2 folio pages. Important letter of recommendation and support addressed to an admiral member of the Chambre des Pairs. Baudin transmits to his correspondent a petition from "his co-religionists in the arrondissement of Le Havre", convinced that it could not be entrusted to better hands: "Your co-religionists from the arrondissement of Le Havre could not have chosen a more worthy intermediary than yourself to convey their sentiments to the Chambre des Pairs. The Admiral takes advantage of this opportunity to recall the memory of his addressee, evoking with emotion his maritime career and the regrets he retains for never having served under his command: "...a former naval officer who has often regretted that circumstances did not call him to serve under you..." He also expresses his deep gratitude for the "benevolent feelings" the admiral has always shown him, despite the fourteen years since their last meeting. A fine letter, very personal and respectful in tone, combining a political approach, a career memory and a tribute to a leading figure in the French navy under the Restoration. Well-preserved manuscript, in large, legible handwriting, signed "Charles Baudin".
