SECCHI (Pietro Angelo). 1818-1878. Italian Jesuit priest. As - Lot 209
SECCHI (Pietro Angelo). 1818-1878. Italian Jesuit priest. Astronomer, astrophysicist and meteorologist. Director of the Roman College Observatory. L.A.S. "P. A. Secchi" to Harold Tarry. Rome, October 9, 1868. 2 pp. in-8. Autograph address on verso. INTERESTING SCIENTIFIC LETTER CONCERNING METEOROLOGICAL PUBLICATIONS AND SCHIAPARELLI'S WORK. Father Angelo Secchi replies here to meteorologist Harold Tarry about the work of astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli and Italian scientific publications on meteorology. He informs his correspondent that : "M. Schiaparelli's memoirs are inserted in part in the Bulletin météorologique du Collège Romain, and another in the Atti della società italiana..." Secchi regrets, however, that he cannot send him separate extracts: "I regret that I only have complete copies of the Bulletin and no extracts..." He then tells Tarry how to obtain these publications directly from Schiaparelli or through the Bulletin météorologique, thus demonstrating the international networks for the circulation of scientific knowledge in 19th-century Europe. The letter bears witness to the constant exchanges between European meteorologists and astronomers concerning new atmospheric observations and Italian scholarly publications. It also sheds light on the major role played by the Collège Romain in the dissemination of contemporary meteorological and astrophysical research. A fine scientific collection by one of the great pioneers of modern astrophysics and stellar spectroscopy. Bends and traces of use. Good overall condition.
