HAMY (Maurice). - Lot 202
HAMY (Maurice).
1861-1936. French astronomer, member of the Bureau des Longitudes, director of the Musée d'Ethnographie du Trocadéro.
L.A.S. "M. Hamy" to Dr. Léon Labbé, member of the Institut and senator. Paris, January 5, 1913. 2 pp. in-8, with stamped envelope.
Beautiful letter of thanks addressed to Senator Léon Labbé following an effective intervention on his behalf. Hamy warmly expresses his gratitude for steps recently taken:
"I have been several times to Boulevard Haussmann [...] to reiterate my deep gratitude to you for the steps you were kind enough to take on my behalf, steps that were so completely, so happily, so quickly successful."
Unable to meet his correspondent, who was detained in Alençon at the time for a General Council meeting, he wishes to express his gratitude immediately:
"Your return will have my deepest gratitude, to which I enclose [...] the expression of my most devoted feelings and respectful friendship."
Interesting piece illustrating the networks of support and recommendation in scholarly and administrative circles during the Third Republic. Nice set, including mailing envelope with Paris postmarks from January 1913.
Maurice Hamy was an important figure in French astronomy and the Bureau des Longitudes, as well as a close collaborator of major national scientific institutions.
Very fine condition.
