RIGNY (Henri, marquis then count of). - Lot 200
RIGNY (Henri, marquis then count of).
1782-1835. French admiral, Minister of the Navy and then Foreign Affairs under the July Monarchy.
L.S. "De Rigny" to Admiral Verhuell. Paris, April 9, 1835. 1 p. large in-8 on Ministry of War letterhead.
Important administrative and military letter concerning the relocation of the 4th Lancers Regiment, addressed to Vice-Admiral and Peer of France Carel Hendrik Ver Huell. De Rigny justifies the ministerial decision to withdraw the regiment from Saint-Germain-en-Laye and transfer it to Poitiers:
"This regiment having been established for more than eighteen months on a point of the 1st Military Division, very close to the Capital, it was only right that another cavalry corps should come in its turn to occupy this advantageous station."
The Minister points out, however, that this measure is not irrevocable, and leaves open the possibility of a later revision:
"If later the requirements of military service can be reconciled with the wish you express to me with regard to this regiment, I beg you to be persuaded that I will not let slip the opportunity to satisfy it."
A fine letter illustrating the issues of garrisoning and the balance of military assignments under the July Monarchy. Of particular interest because of the personality of Rigny, hero of Navarin, then acting Minister of War, a few months before his death in November 1835.
Very good condition. Clean, energetic signature.
