MONTAIGNAC (Louis-Raymond de Chauvance, Marquis de) 1811-1891. French admiral and politician. L.A.S. "Montaignac", Gueutteville, s.d. [circa 1870-1880]. 1 p. in-8 on embossed letterhead "Gueutteville - Côtes du Nord". Short but interesting letter of recommendation addressed to an unidentified correspondent about a young man named Lebas. Montaignac explains that he had already interceded on his behalf with the Ministry of War: "On seeing the paper you gave me yesterday, I realized that I had, eight days ago, recommended young Lebas to the Ministry of War...". The former Minister of the Navy added that he had received the young man at the Ministry and had been "touched by his situation". A fine example of the networks of recommendation and administrative patronage under the Third Republic, on elegant embossed personal letterhead. Well-developed signature. Good overall condition, despite some minor foxing and handling marks.
