WEISS, Jean-Jacques - Lot 196
WEISS, Jean-Jacques
Jean-Jacques Weiss
L.A.S. "J.J. Weiss" to "Mon cher Zeffer". S.l.n.d. 1 ½ page in-16 on embossed paper with his initials "JW".
Interesting literary and journalistic letter concerning book reviews in the Paris press. Weiss discusses the workings of the Paris Journal and recommends to his correspondent the best way to obtain a review of his book:
"It's M. Dommartin who reports on books at the Paris Journal. But I don't know him, having only glimpsed him once or twice for five minutes."
He goes on to offer some practical advice typical of nineteenth-century editorial practice:
"I believe that for him to talk about your work, it will suffice for you to send him a copy at his home, asking him to report on it..."
A charming account of literary and journalistic networks during the Second Empire and the early years of the Third Republic, revealing the mechanisms of recommendation and critical dissemination in the press of the time.
Jean-Jacques Weiss, a feared critic and moderate politician, was successively close to Bonapartist and Orleanist circles. His political and literary columns were long considered authoritative.
Good condition, despite wear folds and small marginal loss without damage to the text.
