VIREY (Joseph Julien). Born in Hortes (Haute-Marne). 1775-18 - Lot 194
VIREY (Joseph Julien). Born in Hortes (Haute-Marne). 1775-1846. French physician, naturalist and philosopher. Chief pharmacist at Val-de-Grâce, member of several learned societies. L.A.S. "J. J. Virey" to "Monsieur" [Professor Langlois]. Paris, January 14, 1833. 1 p. in-8 with address on verso. Curious and interesting letter concerning the search for a tutor for a Parisian family. Virey is intervening on behalf of one of his tenants in rue Buffaut, father of "two young ladies and a young pupil going to college", wishing to hire a private tutor: "...a master of languages, to give repetitions of Latin and Greek to the young pupil aged 12, and also lessons in French language and literature to the young ladies... one aged 15, the other 10..." The parents' demands bear witness to the educational customs of the cultured bourgeoisie under the July Monarchy: "The parents would like this master to be married and of a mature age..." Finally, Virey insists on the desire to obtain "a skilled and highly educated master", adding that the family "will easily agree on the fees". A fine letter evoking private schooling, classical studies and the education of young girls in Paris in the 1830s. Autograph address on verso to "Monsieur Langlois, professeur". Good condition, despite a few folds.
