ROY (Antoine) - Lot 183
ROY (Antoine) Antoine Roy Savigny (Haute-Marne), 1764 - Paris, 1847. Royalist lawyer, member of parliament under the Restoration, budget rapporteur and then Finance Minister under Louis XVIII and Charles X. L.A.S. "Roy", Paris, January 29, 1844; 1 p. in-8 on cream vellum. Beautiful autograph letter of thanks addressed to an unidentified correspondent following New Year's greetings. Roy opens his letter with a courteous administrative apology: "I am truly ashamed to have taken so long to reply to you and to express my gratitude for the greetings you sent me". He explains this delay by the heavy workload that occupied him during the month of January: "I have been so backlogged and burdened with pressing occupations throughout the month of January..." The letter continues in a particularly kind and conciliatory tone, the former minister assuring his correspondent of his constant efforts to contribute to his satisfaction and renewing "the assurance of my affectionate feelings". A charming testimonial to the epistolary practices of senior administration and political personnel under the July Monarchy, this letter reveals the affable, perfectly mastered style of a former minister well-versed in exchanges of representation and political sociability. Very fine autograph signature "Roy". Good condition. Central mailing fold. Very slight traces of handling.
