ROY (Antoine) - Lot 182
ROY (Antoine)
Antoine Roy
Savigny (Haute-Marne), 1764 - Paris, 1847.
Lawyer, royalist deputy under the Restoration, budget rapporteur and then Minister of Finance.
L.A.S. "Roy", Paris, January 12, 1846; 1 p. in-8 on cream vellum.
Interesting autograph letter of thanks addressed to an unnamed correspondent, probably on the occasion of New Year's greetings.
Roy courteously apologizes for the delay in replying, citing the many occupations that have overwhelmed him since the beginning of the year:
"I am a little late in replying to the letter you have done me the honor of writing to me. My time, since January 1st, has been so taken up by indispensable occupations...".
Nevertheless, he insists on the sensitivity with which he received his correspondent's testimonials:
"I was no less sensitive to the good wishes you sent me".
The letter, written in a rapid but elegant style, is typical of the letter-writing habits of senior administrators and political staff under the July Monarchy. It also reveals the measured, affable tone of a statesman who had retired from the top ministerial posts, but remained active in Parisian political and financial circles.
Fine autograph signature "Roy" at the bottom of the letter.
Good condition. Central mailing fold. Very slight marginal wear.
