ROSTAND (Jean) - Lot 181
ROSTAND (Jean) Paris, 1894 - Ville-d'Avray, 1977. French biologist, writer and moralist. Member of the Académie française, son of Edmond Rostand. L.A.S. "Jean Rostand" to an unidentified correspondent. Arnaga, Cambo-les-Bains (Basses-Pyrénées), January 30, 1921. 1 page in-8 square on "Arnaga" engraved headed paper. Charming early autograph letter in which Jean Rostand warmly thanks his correspondent for an article devoted to his work. He writes: "I have been deeply touched by the sympathy you have shown me in your beautiful article..." before adding with modesty: "...and of the far too complimentary terms in which you are willing to speak of my little book." The letter ends with a particularly courteous formula: "Please find here, with all my thanks, the expression of my most cordial and admiring sentiments." An interesting account of Jean Rostand's literary beginnings, written from the Villa Arnaga, the Basque home built by his father Edmond Rostand in Cambo-les-Bains. A fine, well-preserved piece, with the emblematic Arnaga letterhead particularly sought-after by Rostand collectors.
