RÉGNARD (Albert) - Lot 173
RÉGNARD (Albert) Albert Régnard 1836-1903. French physician. Autograph prescription signed "A. Régnard", Joué, May 21, 1883; 1 page in-12 folded, with pharmacy stamp. Curious and interesting handwritten medical prescription written at the end of the 19th century, detailing a complete treatment combining pharmaceutical preparations, diet and hygienic recommendations. In particular, the doctor prescribes: "Ferrico-potassium tartrate (...) similar silver pills - to be taken 4 a day..." as well as : "English magnesia in 1/2 glass of water". and recommends : "Wear a hypogastric belt (...) mixed diet (meat and green vegetables). Get fresh air every day, but avoid overexertion". The document bears a wet pharmacy stamp on the back and is signed "A. Régnard" in Joué. An evocative testimony to therapeutic practices and medical customs under the Third Republic, at a time when prescriptions still combined medication, dietetics and rules of daily living. Albert Régnard was a forensic doctor during the Paris Commune; sentenced to death in absentia, he was finally amnestied in 1879. Folds and usual minor signs of use.
