PERRAUD, Adolphe - Lot 161
PERRAUD, Adolphe Adolphe Perraud L.A.S. addressed to "M. Adolphe Laiz, substitut du procureur impérial à Laval". Biarritz (Basses-Pyrénées), 10 rue des Falaises, s.d. [ca. 1869-1870]. 4 pages in-12 with stamped envelope. Interesting autograph letter in which Adolphe Perraud warmly recommends a cavalry officer likely to be suitable for a matrimonial union mentioned by his correspondent. The prelate writes: "I have recently made the acquaintance of a staff officer attached to the service of the place de Bayonne", before drawing a particularly glowing portrait of the candidate: "an extremely honorable man, whose character, manners and religious sentiments offer very serious guarantees". It goes on to state that the forty-year-old officer is soon to become a "squadron leader", and gives abundant details of his financial and social situation. The letter bears witness to Perraud's networks of religious and bourgeois contacts during the Second Empire, and reveals the role played by certain clergymen in providing moral and social advice to Catholic families. A very fine document, intimate and confidential in tone, well representative of the oratorian's private correspondence. Good condition. Preserved envelope with postmarks and Second Empire stamp.
