PERRAUD, Adolphe - Lot 160
PERRAUD, Adolphe Adolphe Perraud L.A.S. addressed to "M. Adolphe Dubois, procureur de la République à Angers". S.l., March 12 [ca. 1870-1880]. 4 pages in-8 on double sheet with address and postmark preserved. Important, warm autograph letter in which the future Cardinal of Autun addresses religious and spiritual issues surrounding the conversion and return to the faith of a relative named "M. Dubois". Perraud mentions sending pages to "P. Gratry" and develops a meditation on the Christian faith, writing in particular: "There is no such thing as half-Christianity" and "for a logical and loyal man [...] it is absolutely necessary to rediscover the fullness of the Christian life". The prelate also mentions administering the sacraments to a dying person, and considers that "death appears to him as a deliverance". A beautiful letter of spiritual direction, imbued with great moral elevation and sincere religious intensity, characteristic of Perraud's thinking and the liberal Catholicism of the Oratory in the 19th century. Bends, some foxing and small marginal loss without affecting the text; envelope with postmarks preserved.
