PERRAUD, Adolphe - Lot 157
PERRAUD, Adolphe Adolphe Perraud L.A.S. "Ad. Perraud". Autun, September 21, 1895. 4 pages in-8. Important autograph letter from Cardinal Adolphe Perraud, bishop of Autun and member of the Académie française, concerning the organization of a trip to Rome with young pilgrims. He describes in detail the practical difficulties associated with papal audiences, pilgrimage numbers and the ecclesiastical calendar: "The Holy Father has suspended the audiences, only to resume them at the beginning of November..." Perraud advises his correspondent on the best time to undertake the journey, and worries about the conditions of reception in Rome during this period of great religious affluence. The letter bears witness to the bishop's pastoral and diplomatic role in overseeing Catholic pilgrimages in the late 19th century. A fine autograph conclusion, marked by deep Christian cordiality: "Dieu me garde à votre bien affecté dévoué...". A document of great interest for French religious history and relations with Rome under the pontificate of Leo XIII. A few folds and small marginal tears, not serious.
