PERRAUD (Adolphe Louis Albert) - Lot 148
PERRAUD (Adolphe Louis Albert) Lyon, February 7, 1828 - Autun, February 10, 1906. Oratorian, bishop of Autun, cardinal and French historian. L.A.S. signed "Adolphe Perraud", "à l'Oratoire", July 27, 18[6]7; 1 page in-8. Charming spiritual letter addressed to a friend to whom Perraud offers a copy of Saint Augustine's Confessions. The author writes: "I send you and beg you to accept as a souvenir a very-good edition of St. Augustine's Confessions." In a passage imbued with great religious and literary sensitivity, he invites his correspondent to meditate on the work during walks in his "beloved Loire": "You will be able from time to time, while strolling along the hillsides of your beloved Loire, to read some of these admirable pages, and find there what so many others before you have never sought in vain, the great hopes and the source of intimate and lasting consolations." The letter closes with friendly and pious wishes: "I wish you a safe journey, a happy vacation and wholeheartedly call down upon you all God's blessings." A very interesting letter testifying to the spiritual and intellectual role played by the future Cardinal Perraud among his entourage, in a tone that is both pastoral and profoundly Augustinian. Document in fair condition: significant wetness, foxing and paper loss, with marginal damage to the text that is not really serious for reading. Embossed paper from the Oratory of the Immaculate Conception.
