PERRAUD (Adolphe Louis Albert) - Lot 147
PERRAUD (Adolphe Louis Albert)
Lyon, February 7, 1828 - Autun, February 10, 1906.
Oratorian, bishop of Autun, cardinal and French historian.
L.A.S. signed "Adolphe Louis, évêque d'Autun", s.l.n.d. [circa 1880-1890]; 2 pages in-8.
Important letter of moral and spiritual guidance in which the Bishop of Autun urges his correspondent to persevere in Christian and social action despite the difficulties encountered.
Perraud evokes "this grave question" that had deeply occupied him during the summer, and encourages his friend to remain faithful to his mission:
"We must act - and we must exploit God's gift."
In a development highly characteristic of his religious and social thinking, he celebrates the "loyal, honest workers" who seek "the best of life to seek and to dispute", contrasting abstract metaphysics with the concrete reality of Christian action. He stresses the importance of practical commitment and moral duty.
The letter also contains personal allusions to his pastoral activity:
"A wide breach is opening in apostolic struggles; I am well, much better - but preaching remains off-limits to me for a few more months."
The conclusion, imbued with affection and solicitude, testifies to the intensity of the spiritual relationships Perraud maintained with those around him:
"I look forward to your return & I agree, I pray God to fill you in the harsh trials of your filial piety."
A fine letter of religious reflection and moral encouragement, highly representative of the intellectual and pastoral personality of the future Cardinal Perraud.
Very fine condition. Fine embossed paper with the ecclesiastical arms of the bishopric of Autun.
