PERRAUD (Adolphe Louis Albert) - Lot 142
PERRAUD (Adolphe Louis Albert)
Lyon, February 7, 1828 - Autun, February 10, 1906.
Oratorian, bishop of Autun, cardinal and French historian.
L.A.S., Sceaux, May 14, 1890; 3 pages in-8, ecclesiastical dry stamp.
Interesting letter to a correspondent about a manuscript and the author's academic work.
Perraud acknowledges receipt of a "manuscript" which he promises to read carefully after his next return to Autun:
"I will also make available to you any works by P. Gratry that you may wish to consult".
The letter goes on to discuss the work of the Académie française and the intellectual debates of the time. The cardinal mentions the "academic elections" that were imminent at the time, as well as the "belle façon", of which he still expects "further improvement".
The whole reveals a man at the center of the intellectual and religious networks of the late 19th century, combining erudition, pastoral activity and literary preoccupations. The reference to Father Gratry, a major figure in the Oratory, further enhances the historical interest of this correspondence.
A fine letter of work and scholarly sociability, testifying to the exchanges between ecclesiastics and academics under the Third Republic.
Good condition. Some scattered foxing and usual folds.
