PERRAUD (Adolphe Louis Albert) - Lot 141
PERRAUD (Adolphe Louis Albert)
Lyon, February 7, 1828 - Autun, February 10, 1906.
Oratorian, bishop of Autun, cardinal and French historian.
L.A.S. on the letterhead of the Bishopric of Autun, Autun, November 23, 1897; 3 pages in-8.
Important letter addressed to an ecclesiastical correspondent about a work devoted to the "foundations of discourse" by his former colleague and friend, Master Jean Dailly.
Perraud apologizes for his delay in replying, explaining that the volumes had remained "under a heap of pamphlets" accumulated during his many absences:
"Rome - the pastoral visit - the mission in England".
After careful reading, he expressed his appreciation for the work received:
"I have read it in its entirety and wish to express my satisfaction and thanks.
The letter also contains interesting allusions to his public activities in England, where he recalls delivering speeches in London and Canterbury on "September 12 and 17". The whole sheds light on the intellectual and religious relations maintained by the cardinal in the last years of his life, at a time when his international prestige was considerable.
A fine letter of work and friendship, combining erudition, pastoral activity and memories of missions abroad.
Good condition. Usual folds. Very slight ink mark on first leaf.
