PERRAUD (Adolphe Louis Albert) - Lot 136
PERRAUD (Adolphe Louis Albert)
Lyon, February 7, 1828 - Autun, February 10, 1906.
Oratorian, bishop of Autun, cardinal and French historian.
L.A.S. "Ad. Perraud, Prêtre de l'Oratoire", March 28, 1873; 3 pages in-8 on laid paper.
Interesting letter of intellectual and religious content in which Adolphe Perraud recommends several apologetic readings and discusses his preaching activities during Lent.
First, he announces the forthcoming publication of Father de Ségur's lectures on "the revolutionary spirit", specifying that they will appear "after Easter, at Albanel". He also recommends several works of piety and religious erudition:
"You will find two volumes by Dom Guéranger, entitled Le Carême and La Passion, both instructive and edifying reading".
Perraud also mentions the "immortal German classics by Broglie and Bougaud on the Passion of Our Lord", testifying to the importance of the religious and apologetic debates of the time.
The letter then takes a more personal and pastoral turn. He mentions the state of health of a certain "M. Dubois", "appreciably improved since last summer", then describes his own harassing Lenten schedule:
"I have to speak about 1/year 6 times between now and Easter Day, in two successive retreats".
His affectionate conclusion:
"Please accept my affectionate devotion".
An interesting account of Oratorian networks and militant Catholic literature in the early years of the Third Republic.
Very good condition.
