PASTEUR (Louis).
Born in Dole in 1822, died in Marnes-la-Coquette in 1895. French chemist and biologist, founder of modern microbiology. His work on fermentation, pasteurization and vaccines against rabies and anthrax had a lasting impact on medicine and the experimental sciences. Founder of the Institut Pasteur, member of the Académie française, he remains one of the major scientific figures of the 19th century.
Important documentary and iconographic collection dedicated to Louis Pasteur and his scientific work, including portraits, prints, philatelic documents, publications, commemorative souvenirs and autographs, 19th-20th centuries.
The set includes
- a large portrait engraving of Louis Pasteur, with the typographical inscription: "Pasteur Louis - Né à Dole, le 27 décembre 1822" ;
- an engraved profile portrait of Pasteur, mounted on a large sheet, with a large handwritten signature below: "L. Pasteur";
- a reproduction of Laurent Gsell's print, La Vaccine de la rage au laboratoire de M. Pasteur, showing the scientist among his collaborators and patients;
- a 1995 First Day of Issue envelope dedicated to Pasteur, with commemorative stamp and cachets;
- an Institut Pasteur brochure, published to mark the institution's centenary, featuring a large facsimile signature of Pasteur and presenting the museum, library and funeral chapel;
- several sheets and press extracts relating to Pasteur's state funeral and the reception of his scientific work in the medical press at the end of the 19th century;
- a card from Dr. Olavide, a Madrid dermatologist, evoking the "microbes of phthisis defined by Pasteur", accompanied by a small handwritten microscopic sketch and dated July 1889;
- various iconographic documents and printed souvenirs linked to Pasteur's memory and the popular dissemination of his scientific image.
A handsome set, highly evocative of Pasteur's reception in French and European medical history, combining scientific documents, commemorative souvenirs, popular iconography and testimonials to the admiration aroused by his discoveries.
Varied condition, some documents with folds, small marginal tears, usual foxing or wear; decorative and documentary set of great interest for the history of science and medicine.
