NICOLLE, Charles (1866-1936). French physician, microbiologist and writer. Director of the Pasteur Institute in Tunis, professor at the Collège de France, Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1928 for his work on typhus.
L.A.S. to a fellow physician, Rouen, October 19, 1934, 2 pp. in-8 on Institut Pasteur Tunis letterhead, with autograph envelope.
Important scientific and friendly letter addressed to Dr. René Hébert in Rouen. Charles Nicolle mentions several medical readings and works on microbiology and epidemiology that he would like to consult:
"I would need to consult the book by Le Sage de la Clôture: La Constitution épidémique [...] and the book by Jacques de Bettencourt Le Nouveau Carême de pénitence."
He asks his correspondent to obtain these volumes through a mutual friend, while commenting on his current research and reading. The letter bears witness to Nicolle's sustained intellectual activity in the last years of his life, combining medicine, historical reflection and scientific literature.
Fine "Nicolle" signature.
Enclosed is an autograph envelope addressed to "Monsieur le docteur René Hébert".
Interesting account of French scholarly and medical networks between the wars, from one of the great figures of modern microbiology.
A few creases and slight traces of use; overall good condition.
