[mid-19th century]. 1 page in-4, in brown ink, with a surname on verso and traces of a wax seal. Touching autograph letter from Alexandre Moreau de Jonnès, the famous French statistician and economist, in which he emotionally responds to his correspondent's congratulations. In a passage imbued with deep personal gravity, he writes: "I need some affectionate memories to help me bear the weight of my misfortune..." He then evokes the dramatic situation of his family: "My wife is at her wits' end, and I hardly dare to flatter myself that I still have my son..." A rare intimate account from a man best known for his economic and statistical work, revealing here a deeply human and painful dimension. Beautiful autograph signature. Together preserved with its address folio; a few creases, minor foxing and traces of use, not serious.
