MAREY (Étienne-Jules). - Lot 105
MAREY (Étienne-Jules). Born in Beaune, 1830-1904. Physiologist, physician and inventor, pioneer of chronophotography, whose research into the decomposition of motion had a decisive influence on scientific photography and the origins of cinema. Member of the Institut, professor at the Collège de France. L.A.S. "J. Marey" to "Mon cher ami". Paris, August 27, 1883. 1 p. in-8, with 2 business cards enclosed, one signed. Charming letter of apology to a colleague following an awkward encounter at a justice of the peace's house: "On entering Monsieur le Juge de Paix's today, I did not know that it was you I was going to see, and in the presence of my adversary I could not decently shake your hand as I would have liked..." Marey asks his correspondent to accept "his warmest regards" and concludes cordially: "I adhere, dear colleague, and send you my best regards...". Two cartes de visite printed at his boulevard Delessert-Trocadéro address are enclosed, one blank, the other bearing an autograph signed letter. A fine set of works by one of the great French scientists of the 19th century, whose work on movement paved the way for developments in biomechanics and experimental cinema. Very good condition.
