LECOUTEUX (Édouard). - Lot 94
LECOUTEUX (Édouard). 1814-1894. Agronomist, agricultural journalist and editor-in-chief of the Journal d'agriculture pratique. L.A.S. "E. Lecouteux". Paris, June 23, 1866. 1 page in-8 on letterhead of Journal d'Agriculture pratique, 26 rue Jacob, Paris. Interesting letter concerning the organization of the Journal d'agriculture pratique's collaboration networks and the mobilization of France's agricultural elites in the mid-19th century. Lecouteux informs his correspondent that he has discovered "with great pleasure" his name among the journal's contributors, and stresses the importance of this participation: "More than ever, agriculture needs the help of the men it is accustomed to finding at its head". He clearly sets out the editorial ambition of his periodical, which is intended to "bring these men together" and offer them "publicity which we will be happy to see them enjoy as often as possible". This letter perfectly illustrates the role played by the specialized press in structuring agronomic circles under the Second Empire, at a time when learned societies, large landowners, agricultural engineers and journalists were working together to modernize French rural practices. Founder of one of the leading agricultural journals of the 19th century, Édouard Lecouteux played an active role in disseminating technical innovations and building a vast national network of correspondents and collaborators. A fine letter of editorial direction, revealing the intellectual and media organization of the French agricultural world in the 1860s.
