LECOUTEUX (Édouard).
1814-1894. Agronomist, agricultural journalist and editor-in-chief of the Journal d'agriculture pratique.
L.A.S. "E. Lecouteux". Paris, August 21, 1867. 1 page in-8 on letterhead of Journal d'Agriculture pratique, 26 rue Jacob, Paris.
Interesting letter concerning agricultural experimentation and modern plowing techniques in the mid-nineteenth century.
Lecouteux first congratulates his correspondent on his articles devoted to "Erveddale plowing", testifying to the attention paid at the time to mechanical innovations and new cultivation methods. He would like to obtain further information so that he can report on them in the Journal d'agriculture pratique, and asks in particular: "Could we find an Ervedale plough to use at the ploughing competition mentioned in the journal?
This letter illustrates the essential role played by the agricultural press in disseminating technical progress under the Second Empire, at a time when regional competitions, comparative trials and the improvement of farming implements were actively contributing to the modernization of French agriculture.
An influential figure in the world of agronomy, Édouard Lecouteux was one of the great promoters of exchanges between practitioners, engineers and rural landowners. For several decades, his Journal d'agriculture pratique was one of France's leading agricultural popularization publications.
A fine letter of work and scientific exchange, revealing the technical debates and networks of 19th-century French agronomy.
