JEANNET DES LONGROIS (Jean-Baptiste Claude). 18th-century Fr - Lot 87
JEANNET DES LONGROIS (Jean-Baptiste Claude). 18th-century French physician, Doctor Regent of the Paris Faculty of Medicine. Autograph document signed "Jeannet des Longrois". S.l.n.d. [late 18th century]. 2 pp. in-4 oblong on laid paper. Interesting handwritten medical prescription detailing a treatment designed to relieve stomach pains and digestive disorders, combining purgatives, herbal teas and a strict diet. In particular, the practitioner recommends: "after drinking a bitter infusion for a few days, Madame will be purged with: rhubarb [...] syrup of peach blossom [...]". and then specifies a second herbal tea treatment: "boil an ounce of sarsaparilla in two and a half pints of water [...]" The doctor also stresses the importance of a strict diet: "One must deprive oneself of milk, acids, raw vegetables, pastries, pure wines, liqueurs, black meats, eels, mushrooms, pungent stews..." A fine example of therapeutic practice in French medicine at the end of the 18th century, testifying to customs still largely inherited from humoral medicine, where purges, plant decoctions and dietary discipline played an essential role. In 1787, Jeannet des Longrois published Conseils aux femmes de quarante ans, considered the first French work entirely devoted to menopause, inspired by the work of English physician John Fothergill. Document showing several old wet spots with no noticeable damage to the text; small marginal tear. Well-readable handwriting and a fine set of documents.
