GUÉRIN (Jules). Born in Boussu (Belgium) in 1801, died in 18 - Lot 76
GUÉRIN (Jules). Born in Boussu (Belgium) in 1801, died in 1886. Belgian physician, member of the Académie de médecine. Owner of the Gazette de santé, which became the Gazette médicale de Paris in 1830.
L.A.S. "Jules Guérin" to his colleague M. Double. Paris, s.d. [Monday 14]. 1 p. in-8 with address on verso. Printed letterhead of the Gazette de Santé, rue de Lulli, place de l'ancien Opéra.
Interesting medical letter in which Jules Guérin urgently seeks the advice of several colleagues on a particularly difficult clinical case.
The practitioner writes to his colleague:
"You will oblige me greatly to come, tomorrow morning at 8 ½ [...] rue Feydeau n°9, hôtel des étrangers, to help me with your advice in a very obscure and difficult case."
He specifies that he has also summoned another well-known doctor:
"I asked Mr. Marjolin to be there at the same hour..."
This letter bears witness to the collegial nature of 19th-century Parisian medicine, where difficult consultations gave rise to veritable meetings of practitioners around the patient. It also sheds light on the scientific and medical network revolving around the Gazette médicale de Paris, a major publication in French medicine at the time.
A moving copy, with an urgent, confraternal tone. Slight tear at the postmark, but no damage to the text. Generally well preserved.
