GENDRIN, Augustin Nicolas (1796-1890). French physician, hea - Lot 69
GENDRIN, Augustin Nicolas (1796-1890). French physician, head of department at Hôpital de la Pitié, author of the famous Mémoire médico-légal sur la mort du prince de Condé.
M.A.S. "Gendrin", Paris, December 25, 1845. 3 pages ¾ in-4, on double sheet, red collection stamp at head.
Important autograph medical prescription written for a patient presenting "the first symptoms of paraplegia". Gendrin meticulously details a seven-point therapeutic treatment, typical of mid-nineteenth-century neurological and counter-irritant practices.
In particular, the doctor recommends:
"apply four fontanelles to the vertebral gutters".
and develops a complex protocol involving caustic potash, medicated frictions, baths, diet and strict rest:
"Caustic potash would only be useful in making them very deep [...] Keep resting on the bed or sofa for most of the day [...]"
The letter is a remarkable testimony to the pre-neurological medical treatments employed before the advances of the late 19th century. Prescriptions for artificial "fontanelles" and cauterization reveal therapeutic conceptions still inherited from humorous medicine and revulsive methods.
Very legible document, in brown ink, signed "Gendrin", with mention of his position as physician at the Hôpital de la Pitié. A few creases and minor traces of use, not serious.
A historically interesting document for the history of French neurology and hospital medicine.
