DENIS (Ferdinand) - Lot 40
DENIS (Ferdinand) Ferdinand Denis Paris, 1798 - Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 1890. Traveler, historian, bibliographer and administrator of the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève, renowned specialist in Brazilian history and literature. 2 L.A.S. "Ferdinand Denis", Paris, August 10 and 13, 1868; set of 5 pp. in-8, one on Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève letterhead, with autograph envelope. Interesting set of two autograph letters to a correspondent on the subject of his son's studies and examinations, revealing Ferdinand Denis's role as a supporter and intermediary in Second Empire academic and administrative circles. In the first letter, dated August 10, 1868, Denis describes in detail the steps he had taken to promote the young man's university studies. In particular, he recommends the young man to "M. Colmet d'Aage", Dean of the Faculty of Law, "on the best terms", and also mentions "M. le B. Malouet". The letter also takes a literary turn when Denis returns to an article devoted to the disappearance of Jules Janin, for which he discusses "the cause of the apparent silence" observed on the subject. The second letter, dated August 13, 1868, is more developed and bears witness to the continuity of these interventions. In it, Ferdinand Denis learns that the correspondent's son has been unable to attend an examination due to a worrying state of health. He then details the measures envisaged to enable him to continue his studies and subsequently obtain his registration or presentation in November. The tone, both benevolent and highly involved, reveals the networks of intellectual and academic solidarity maintained by Denis. Several personalities from the academic world are mentioned. A fine set of documents illustrating relations between scholars, academics and administrators in the 19th century, as well as the practice of recommendation in Parisian institutions. Very good condition. Usual folds, minor traces of use. Autograph envelope preserved.
